NLE July 2011 Update # 7 "Yes to Mass Oath-Taking"

'We want Oath-taking.'
This seems to be the message of the Philippine Nursing Association (PNA) and Association of Deans of Philippine Colleges of Nursing (ADPCN) as the following, back-to-back articles, by Jocelyn R. Uy of Philippine Daily Inquirer and Sheila Crisostomo of The Philippine Star, were published this morning regarding the position of these two Nursing Organizations re: Cancellation of Oath-taking for July 2011 NLE Passers:

Nursing deans question oath-taking cancellation
By Sheila Crisostomo (The Philippine Star) Updated August 30, 2011 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Nurses Association (PNA) and the Association of Deans of Philippine Colleges of Nursing (ADPCN) yesterday questioned the scrapping of the mass oath-taking for those who passed the licensure examination for nurses.

PNA president Dr. Teresita Barcelo said the announcement by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) came “too late in the day,” disappointing not only the nurses but their parents as well.

“Many of these nurses are sons and daughters of migrant workers who come home just to witness them taking their oath. How can we deny that to them? That should have been announced long before,” she said in an interview.

The PRC has decided to shelve the traditional mass oath-taking for newly-licensed nurses as part of the government’s austerity measures. The oath-taking for those who passed the July licensure tests for nurses is expected to be held early next month.

Barcelo claimed that the government has not been spending for this event. The nurses themselves pay a fee of P350 and another P250 for each companion, she said.

“There is no budget from the government for this (oath-taking). None that I know of and if that is the policy, why single out nurses? That should apply to all other professionals. Why do they discriminate (against) us?” Barcelo added.

The PRC’s Board of Nursing (BON) used to collect the fees but due to some controversies, the PNA assumed the task with the supervision of the BON.

The PNA and ADPCN urged the PRC to allow them to push through with the oath-taking for nurses.

“Many parents want to witness this milestone in their children’s life, thus, the mass oath-taking was conceptualized,” Barcelo said.

There are more than 37,000 passers in the July licensure examination for nurses.

Nurses hit scrapping of rites
By Jocelyn R. Uy, Philippine Daily Inquirer 1:29 am | Tuesday, August 30th, 2011

The decision of the Professional Regulation Commission’s (PRC) Board of Nursing to scrap the mass oath-taking rites for newly registered nurses starting this year is not sitting well with the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA).

PNA national president Teresita Barcelo on Monday said the move to cancel the mass oath-taking ceremony next month may be too late for the oath-takers’ parents, mostly working overseas, who have already taken their leave from work to attend the event.

“It would be OK if it was announced earlier because now many parents and relatives of the oath-takers are anticipating the oath-taking and some are even coming home from abroad for that event,” Barcelo said in a phone interview.

She said the PNA wrote the PRC last Thursday after being informed of its decision, appealing that it push through with the ceremony, at least this time.
The association has even offered to sponsor the event just to see it push through on Sept. 25-26.
The PNA asked the commission to implement its decision starting in December, when the next board exam for nurses will be given, so that everyone would be informed early.
She said that last month the association reserved a venue for the oath-taking, which 14,000 to 15,000 board passers are expected to attend. At least 37,500 of 78,135 examinees passed.
“We could still hold the mass oath-taking and we could simplify it,” she said, stressing the importance of giving recognition to the exam topnotchers and to the schools that are doing well.

The Department of Labor and Employment on Sunday announced that the PRC’s Board of Nursing had decided to do away with the mass oath-taking to spare the government from the expenses “relevant to the holding of the traditional mass oath-taking.”

The announcement said it would help the families of the board passers save money as well.
But Barcelo said the event had always been a “self-liquidating activity,” in which not a single centavo came from the government. “The government does not spend for the occasion,” she said.

Not mandatory, board passers who choose to attend the mass oath-taking ceremony pay P250 to P350 for their guests.

She added that conducting the oath-taking either individually or by group during registration for nursing licenses with the PRC would be “inefficient” and “time-consuming” considering the almost 40,000 who passed the exam.

“This sends the wrong signal… it looks like they are discouraging these board passers not to be nurses anymore,” she said.

[GUEST BLOG POST] The Bulb and The Fireflies in the Midst of Darkest Hours

What comes in your mind when you hear stars or full moon? Perhaps their appearance at night or their color of white or yellow.

Uhmm, when I hear these two heavenly bodies, for the moon, its round shape and its color yellow with a sad-like face painted on it while the stars are their twinkle-playing lights. When I see a calendar, I always wanted to see the date and the time the full moon will appear fully lighted with the help of the sun on the other side of the mother earth.

It’s nice to see a full moon at night with matching sounds of crickets or any other sound-producing insects. From where your body and soul feel relax and comfortable, where your current matters unconsciously forgotten. While seeing the moon-full, there’s something I feel from my body and mind that I couldn’t understand, somewhat feeling of a little-cry-child again playing under the well-lighted night. And these is the reason why I feel like this, I only remember my childhood days with my playmates whom I used to play with tagu-taguan, pinangit, playing text cards, catching alitaptap (fireflies), sungka, anya-anyani and story-telling of ghost experiences in the kubo house. It’s remarkable to miss these things I used to do when I was a young kid before with my co-playmates.

Of course with the matching sparkle of a million flashlights of stars, I also used to go under the chico tree of our side yard lying in the duyan (swing), seeing these twinkling lights. Somewhat they are trying to do something that I couldn’t understand, as if they are trying to make the moon’s painted sad face turn to smiling face thru their dancing lights oh merriness. Its funny isn’t it? When I see these stars, I always wanted to figure out where are the patterns of constellation located at, their counts, to point out the big ones, and off course the rosary stars and the twins… somewhat I couldn’t do anything but these.

Sometimes I know that this heavenly body that prevails at night signifies something. The MOON which is the BIG OR PRIMARY DREAM we want to achieve in our life while the STARS are the PEOPLE/FRIENDS around us that will help us to make this dream come true; that in this world, that this dream is impossible to achieve without our inspiration with others and their presence as if they are coaching us that we can reach our big dream!

In our life, protect and love the people around you, appreciate them, acknowledge their help nonetheless even little or nonsense, make your friends, hatred, or even enemies as your inspiration; who knows, they maybe your key to achieve your goal in life. Just remember these words; loss of one friend will lead to the step by step falling-off chance to achieve your goal or dream in life. Keeping something you can’t give up in your heart is equated to hindrance… FAMILY is Unequatable. FRIENDS are Gold. You are of yourself today because of them; molded your personality, taught how to live and mingle with others.

Your chance is today; start to value your friends as they value you. Start to appreciate their little things as they appreciate yours. Say thanks to your hatred or enemies. In this world, “you don’t need many friends or countless of friends, what you need most are friends who are genuine to you, who understand you, who appreciate you and who value you…

P.S.  In this title of the article I made, the bulb symbolizes the moon while the fireflies represent the stars. The reason behind is that the moon as a bulb lights the night to guide our way in the midst of the darkness on the other hand are the stars as fireflies because when the stars and the moon are covered with cumulus or nimbus clouds, they aid as little-dancing candles of the night.

“Hope you have enjoyed reading this little article I made… wala kasi ako magawa sa bahay pag tapos na ako magluto, manuod ng palabas sa tv at mga gawaing bahay jjejej…” pasenya nalang kung may maling wordings o sa grammar jeje,, pilipino kasi ako haha..

THANK YOU'S NOT ENOUGH

Parang kelan langnauntog ako sa microphone habang nagba-bow after my Valedictory Address nung Kinder.

It was trully a long journey:
§  Kindergarden - David Elementary School
§  Grades 1-4 - Sto. Tomas Learning Center (now Sto. Tomas Catholic School)
§  Grades 5-6 - Mangaldan Central School Batch 2003
§  High School (1st-4th Year) - Mangaldan National High School Special Science Class Batch 2007
§  Tertiary (1st-4th Year) - University of Pangasinan PHINMA Education Network Batch 2011

To my Parents, Siblings, Relatives, Teachers and Classroom Advisers, Classroom and Clinical Instructors, Fellow Present and Past UPCNSO (and FCO, SopCO, JCO and SCO) Officers and our Advisers, Classmates, Friends, Best friends, JMK, Archimedianz '07, former Block N, present Blocks L and M, my Mahal and Naro, and all who were with me during this journey, and most especially to You my Creator, I offer my Sincerest and Overwhelming Gratitude to all of you!
Hope to see and work with you again in the next chapter of my life.

This is certainly not a Spam. If you have received a link to this Blog Entry, it only means that this blog is also dedicated to you. Please feel free to add a comment. Again, thanks for all!

I am really proud to be a product of these Schools:
UNIVERSITY OF PANGASINAN PHINMA Education Network. Shows how busy the city of Dagupan is especially during school days. Our batch faced many controversies but in the end we still graduated as we believe that in the end of the day we only have each other and kami-kami lang din naman ang magtutulungan kung may problema. I will continue to live by my Alama Mater's ideals, Patria, Scientia, Virtus!

MANGALDAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL. I will never forget how I, myself, was amazed how big the Centennial Building is. Our room during our 4th year in the school isn't shown in this photo.

MANGALDAN I CENTRAL SCHOOL. Though I only spent 2 years in this school, I am really proud to have MCS as my Alma Mater.

SANTO TOMAS CATHOLIC SCHOOL (then SANTO TOMAS LEARNING CENTER AND HIGH SCHOOL). This school made me closer to God. There were times when we held some of our school activities in the St. Thomas Aquinas Church and I could really feel the solemnity of those activities.

DAVID ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. I will never forget my Kindergarden year in this school. I became the Valedictorian of my batch then and Daisy's my Salutatorian (?, tama ba?). Daisy later became the Valedictorian of Batch 2003 and I only graduated as an ordinary student (?, haha) of Mangaldan I Central School. We later became classmates and friends again when we entered High School as we both qualified for Special Science Class of Mangaldan National High School. (Ayun, napahaba na ang kwento ko.)

The Show Goes On

CLOSING (AND GRADUATION) SPEECH
(for our BACCALAUREATE MASS AND PINNING CEREMONIES
held last March 22, 2011 at Jimmy L. Fernandez Center (Stadia), Dagupan City, Pangasinan):
by Keith Giomeer Raposas Petrola

I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everybody who attended this momentous event, Sir Rosauro Catabay, Dean Maria Teresa Fajardo, our Program Chair Rosario Charisse Venzon, our Over-all RLE Coordinator, Zenaida Bautista, the two women behind us through our last year in College, Eileen Vinluan and Maria Akarasha Onrubia, our Classroom and Clinical Instructors who were with us during our ups and downs, our parents and guardians who were always there at our side and never stopped showing their unwavering support, and most especially, you, my friends, my brothers and sisters, my fellow Seniors.

This has been a very long day for us. As I was constructing this speech, I thought, “Bakit ko pa hahabaan ang Speechko eh, alam ko namang wala namang makikinigmarahilang nasa isip na ng mga yunyung kainan pagkatapos o yungparty-party pagkatapos.” After quite sometime, this made me laugh, Naisip ko, may kasabihan pala na,”Tell me who your friends are, and I’ll tell who you are.”

Kidding aside, as much as I would like to make this speech as brief as possible, I would like to convey and emphasize this one very important message I have in mind, NEVER CEASE TO DREAM AND ALWAYS STRIVE FOR THE BEST.

I know and truly believe that we could survive all the difficulties that we’ll encounter. Like how we’ve survived every toxic duty we’ve had, like we’ve remained bloodily awake and sleepless as we prepare for our upcoming exams and even more nights as we wait for the much dreaded results of these exams. This will only be possible if we’ll just learn to believe into ourselves. If we’ll see to it that we’ll learn from every mistake and shortcoming that we commit in our lives.

Break all the barriers.(Kaya nga No Boundaries and Class Song natin di ba?)Never dwell on the negative comments they throw at you. The catch in life is to remain an optimist even at times when everybody around you is in contrary. If you think it’s the right thing to do, then do it, because it’s certainly what’s right for you. Lastly, don’t even try to please everyone. Doing such is like Mission Impossible. There will always be somebody who’ll be satisfied on what you’re doing.

As much as we all know, this is so not the end of the road for us but rather an end to an act of our lives full of chapters remaining to be unveiled. Like what my favourite song of Lupe Fiasco tells us, The Show Goes On. This is just another beginning of much bigger steps that we’ll take tomorrow. According to Michael Dell of Dell Computers, We are free to choose, and We are free to succeed. It just takes hard work and a dream.  Most who finally surpassed this chapter of life never imagine that they’re going to change the world. Yet every one of us will. How we change the world, is all up to us to decide.

I wish us all a great adventure on the road ahead.

My picture while delivering the speech.

Thank you!
