  • Disease Susceptibility

  • Hamsters tend to be affected by relatively few naturally occurring diseases. Their susceptibility, however, to a host of infectious diseases of other animals, including people, and the case with which these diseases can be transmitted to hamsters have made them very popular laboratory animals for biomedical research. ‘Teddy bear’ hamsters and other genetic varieties tend to be much more susceptible to disease and sensitive to antibiotics and other drugs than golden hamsters. (1)

  • Recognition of Hamster Diseases

  • Because hamsters are very small, nocturnal (night- active) and not closely observed, the early signs of illness are frequently overlooked or not noted at all. Hamster owners must be constantly vigilant for signs of illness and must seek immediate veterinary assistance when illness is suspected. (1)

Sick hamsters often become irritable and frequently bite. They are usually reluctant to move about and walk stiffly when forced to do so. Their eyes often look dull and sunken, and frequently have a discharge. Sick hamsters often stop eating or greatly reduce their intake of food. Consequently, weight loss is a common sign (not necessarily an easy one to recognize) of illness in hamsters. Fluid losses from diarrhea also may cause marked weight loss. Sudden intestinal disease (with accompanying diarrhea) is the most common illness of hamsters, especially amongst those being weaned or recently weaned. If the serious accompanying dehydration is not recognized immediately and corrected with appropriate fluid therapy at the direction of a veterinarian, death is probable. (1)

  • Hamster Conditions

  • Teeth Problems

  • The incisor (front, gnawing) teeth grow continuously for the life of the hamster (this is true for all rodents). They receive continuous wear as the uppers and lowers contact each other,

  • Health care

  • With proper care and diet, hamsters tend to be healthy animals. The most common health problem is called “wet tail” and appears as foul smelling diarrhea. It is usually related to the stress of moving to a new home or a sudden change in diet. Preventative medication is available and can also be used to treat it should it occur. It is best to pick up a small amount of food the hamster has been used to and mix it with any new food being introduced. Do not offer your hamster fresh veggies or fruit for about a week and then do so gradually and in small amounts. (6)

  • CHECK FOR YOUR NORMAL HAMSTER VITAL SIGNS (23):

  • Adult body weight: 95 - 150g (female); 85 - 130g (male)
    Life span: 1.5 - 2 years
    Respiratory rate: 35 - 135 breaths/minute
    Heart rate: 250 - 500 beats/minute
    Normal average rectal temperature: 102ºF

  • Hamster Hematology (24):

  • RBC 7,500,000/mm
    WBC 7,600/mm
    Segmented Neutrophils 21.9%
    Non-segmented Neutrophils 8.0%
    Lymphocytes 73.5%
    Monocytes 2.5%
    Eosinophils 1.1%
    Basophils 1.1%

  • The weekly health check

  • Get into the habit of examining your pet carefully every week. It’s a good idea to weigh him too. Make this a regular thing and you’ll bond better with your pets. And you’ll catch any problems early – your Syrian hamster is nocturnal, so health issues might not be so easy to spot. (3)

  • General

  • Check that your Syrian hamster’s behaviour is normal – active and playful in the evening. Gauge how they walk, looking for limping, or signs of pain. A sick pet will be irritable and may bite more frequently. (3)

  • Hamster Skeleton (25)

  • Mouth and nose

  • The nose should be clean and dry – sneezing and runny nose are signs of cold or fl u. Check to ensure that your
pet’s teeth haven’t grown too long. See whether they’re misaligned or

An Importance of Computerized patient records

Informed Consent = No Hidden Agenda

You work in a charity hospital catering to indigent patients. As a matter of policy, ECG tests are done for free in the charity hospital, which owns the ECG machine. A patient approaches you claiming that the internist interpreting the ECG charges P200 per reading. When you discuss the matter with the internist, ... (click here to continue)

Therapeutic Privelege: When to invoke it?

The daughter of your patient requested you not to reveal the diagnosis of lung cancer to her father who she claimed had suffered previous bouts of major depression. Who will be the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year?

Hearing the news about CNN Heroes 2011 made me remember a fellow Filipino, Efren Penaflorida. He won as the 2009 Hero of the Year because of his Dynamic Teen Company's educational program for street children. I asked myself: Who will be the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year?

I think Derreck Kayongo deserve to be named as the CNN Hero of the Year 2011. All of them (the 10 finalists) deserve support for their unique programs but Kayongo, a native of Uganda, caught my attention because of the efficiency and extent (includes, but not limited to, Haiti, Uganda, Kenya and Swaziland) of his program regarding recycling (hotel) soap bars. Being a member of the health care force, I can also relate to the vital need of each and everyone for basic sanitation.

"Are we really throwing away that much soap at the expense of other people who don't have anything?" --CNN Hero Derreck Kayongo

Note: I initially chose Elena Duron Miranda (from Argentina) because of her program that helps keep about 200 children out of the trash dump and enrolled in school (PETISOS) but she withdrawn from being included in the Top 10.

How about you? Who do you think will be the 2011 CNN Hero of the Year?

    The CNN Freedom Project

    Let's end Modern-Day Slavery!

I support this campaign by CNN for I believe the problem on slavery and human trafficking should have been stopped long time ago or at the very least should be stopped now!
I also salute the news organization for this unique way of opening our eyes  and getting us involved in the fight against the aforementioned problems.
I also made a paper plane where I could write my stand in this issue but I latter realized that the image file was corrupted so I tried to google for one.
